Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) is seeking a Volunteer Classroom Assistant to engage elementary-aged girls and teach hands-on STEM activities in-person at public elementary schools in Oakland and Richmond, CA. If you have one afternoon a week and would like to give back to the community, we would love to hear from you. This is an unpaid, volunteer position.
You will work with a Head Teacher who leads the class. These positions are in-person. Check-out what our classes look like: SAfG in Action!
COMMITMENT:
- One day a week M - F (you can pick the day)
- 2 - 3 hrs / week
- January 2026 - June 2026 (no classes during district breaks)
- Core work hours will be approximately 2:30 - 5:30
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Help support a warm & welcoming learning environment
- Assist Head Teacher to deliver fun, engaging project-based STEM activities on site at elementary schools
- Consistently attend in-person classes on a weekly basis
- Promote the SAfG mission and scientist’s mindset in each class (6 C’s: Curious, Committed, Confident, Careful, Creative and Changemakers).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Interest in STEM
- Experience with children in some capacity
- Consistently attend class on a weekly basis from September 2025 - May 2024 (27 weeks), but planned absences as needed and subs available in case of illness
- Commitment to educational equity and programming for girls
- Ability to maintain an excellent work ethic, a high level of energy and enthusiasm
- Need to pass clearances of negative TB Test and Live Scan (Department of Justice Background Check)
