Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) is seeking a Volunteer Classroom Assistant to engage elementary-aged girls and teach hands-on STEM activities in-person at public elementary schools in Oakland and Richmond, CA. If you have one afternoon a week and would like to give back to the community, we would love to hear from you. This is an unpaid, volunteer position.

You will work with a Head Teacher who leads the class. These positions are in-person. Check-out what our classes look like: SAfG in Action!

COMMITMENT:

One day a week M - F (you can pick the day)
2 - 3 hrs / week
January 2026 - June 2026 (no classes during district breaks)
Core work hours will be approximately 2:30 - 5:30

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Help support a warm & welcoming learning environment
Assist Head Teacher to deliver fun, engaging project-based STEM activities on site at elementary schools
Consistently attend in-person classes on a weekly basis
Promote the SAfG mission and scientist’s mindset in each class (6 C’s: Curious, Committed, Confident, Careful, Creative and Changemakers).

QUALIFICATIONS:

Interest in STEM
Experience with children in some capacity
Consistently attend class on a weekly basis from September 2025 - May 2024 (27 weeks), but planned absences as needed and subs available in case of illness
Commitment to educational equity and programming for girls
Ability to maintain an excellent work ethic, a high level of energy and enthusiasm
Need to pass clearances of negative TB Test and Live Scan (Department of Justice Background Check)
